The Marangu village day trip has culture, cuisine, caves and plenty of lively conversation. You’ll even take a dip in a waterfall so bring your swimming suits.
Marangu Chagga village nestles on the fertile slopes of majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, and it’s brimming with tradition. You’ll explore the culture and terrifying history of the Chagga Tribe (they built those caves for a reason) and you’ll take a short but delightful hike in the lush green landscape to a sparkling waterfall but, don’t worry, you won’t run out of energy because you’ll visit a coffee plantation and have a chance to roast and make your own cup of coffee. The buzz you’ll get from our packed so full it hurts Marangu day trip won’t just be the caffeine.
Day 1: Drive from Moshi to Marangu Village
After breakfast your driver guide will pick you from your accommodation and drive to Marangu village.
The area around Marangu is home to the local Chagga tribe and you will learn all about their history and traditions on this full day excursion. You will visit a small coffee farm, where you will learn about how the coffee is grown, harvested and processed locally. Try your own hand at processing, roasting and preparing a fresh cup of coffee.
Another highlight will be the visit to the Chagga Underground Caves and the Chagga Live Museum.
In times of drought the Maasai migrated up the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, in search of food and water. They enslaved and killed the local Chagga people. In defense of these attacks the Chagga built an extensive network of underground caves. Your guide will lively illustrate the conflict while you visit the caves.
After there we will drive for like 10 minutes to the Chagga Live Museum, a small outdoor museum, which will give you further insides into traditional chagga life. Our tour also includes a chagga culinary taste, when we stop for lunch in a small restaurant. Here you will be served a traditional hot meal, later you will also have the chance to try the local spirits such as banana beer and wine.
Once you have finished we will depart for the Ndoro Waterfalls. Our hike to the base of the waterfall will lead us through lush green landscape and the descend takes approximately 30mnts. Here you have the opportunity to relax and take a refreshing bath in the pool of the waterfall, late afternoon will drive back to Moshi.
